Discovery-Russian Federation

This week’s place of Discovery belongs to one of the world’s largest countries-the Russian Federation. Russia is home to a number of great jazz musicians, clubs and festivals. The U.S. has many great jazz musicians that were born in Russia and reside in the States (Alex Sipiagin & Eldar Djangirov to name two). But, in this week’s post I wanted to focus on musicians who still reside in Russia. The 3 musicians listed below are well-known not only in their country, but in the Jazz community as well.

As with our past locations, the goal is to introduce you to 3 new musicians each week from different parts of the world. My hope is you will find some new discoveries, support them by buying their albums and by attending their concerts if you are in their area (or they in yours). Another benefit is for you to hear new musicians and how they approach their instrument and jazz. You never know where you might find your next favorite line!

The Russian Federation is a massive country with a lot of musicians. A great way to keep track of what is happening in the Russian jazz community is checking out the magazine Jazz.RU/eng. This has been an interesting resource to me in finding out what has been going on in the Russian jazz scene.

Like mentioned last week with Australia; Russia has been the home to a number of jazz musicians known and unknown. Hopefully the musicians below are people you will start checking out (if you have not already).

Oleg Butman-drums

These are just a few of literally hundreds of great jazz musicians you can find in and/or from Russia. If you have checked out these musicians above, be sure to check out their websites and albums to support them. I would also highly encourage you to look up other great Russian musicians and see what this great country has to offer in terms of Jazz.

    1. Nachum-you are correct. Oleg is the drummer (he is the younger brother of saxophonist Igor Butman). Thanks for catching that. It was a typo that I have corrected.
